Welcome to St Cuthman’s
Named after St. Cuthman of Steyning, St. Cuthman’s Retreat & Meeting Centre is a quiet house run by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Arundel & Brighton. The house is set within 25 acres of fields & woodland grounds with access to the South Downs and the historic Sussex countryside. We welcome those wishing to make a private retreat, guided retreat, or those just wanting some “time out” to relax in our peaceful surroundings.
In the main house there are 17 bedrooms (8 single and 9 twin), with en-suite bathrooms. This includes a flat which can be self-catering, which has a twin bedroom, bathroom, sitting room and kitchen. All our accommodation is situated on the first and second floors of the house. The main house also includes an entrance hall, library, drawing room, small meeting room (Florence Allshorn Room), meditation room, silent dining room and conservatory dining room. There are open fires throughout the ground floor which are lit in season. Our chefs provide delicious home cooked food to nurture and support your retreat.
Our small Chapel is separate from the house, with the Blessed Sacrament reserved, with a wonderful view of the grounds behind the altar. The Chapel has been a place of worship since 1944 and daily worship continues today. We hold morning and evening prayer each day and try to celebrate Mass in the Roman Catholic Tradition daily. The Chapel is always available for personal prayer, reflection and meditation.
“The Bothy” building is set apart from the main house and contains “The Cardinal Cormac Meeting Room”, “Fern”, (a single ground floored room suitable for wheelchair access, with en-suite bathroom), as well as laundry and shower facilities for those who are camping within the grounds at St. Cuthman’s.
To preserve the peaceful atmosphere of ongoing retreats we regret that we are not open to unannounced visitors however, please contact us to arrange some time away, with plenty of space for quietness, pondering, healing and celebration.
We look forward to welcoming you!
